Blaze works on the assembly line at the Factory for Production of Bits and Baubles as a welder (fire-breathing comes in handy!). In most situations, Blaze is an extremely poor liar. However, Blaze cannot ignore the siren call of increasing hoard size, and can usually do what is required to make it happen.

Entry 1
In order to study human behaviour and how the emotional compulsions influence their non-logical actions, I have decided to perform a case study - I will call this subject "M." This human is particularly compelled by emotional motives, to the degree that even other humans seem to pick up on the absurdity of her actions. In the short time I have observed her, she has involuntarily released tears for the following reasons:

* Saw a "cute" puppy
* Ate a piece of candy
* Stubbed her toe
* Stepped on pet otter's toe
* Stepped on an ant
* No discernible reason, when questioned, tear production increased and honking noises grew louder

I will have to find other subjects to compare to see if this is average behaviour.

Entry 2
It appears as though finding an additional subject will not be difficult. A new subject, termed "C," has attached herself to subject M and refuses to leave. Subject C is extremely combative. She is also extremely small in stature. I have seen her react in anger (occasionally attempting to initiate combat) to the following:

* Someone mentioned the word "diminutive" in her hearing
* She was asked to speak up
* She could not reach an item on a shelf and destroyed everything on lower shelves
* A male human called her "cute"
* Someone said something positive about elves
* Someone said something negative about elves
* Someone said something neutral about elves

It appears as though each individual case responds with a different emotion to stimuli, but both respond entirely irrationally. I will continue to attempt to elicit these types of responses in both cases.

Entry 3
The subjects have done something very illogical. They have agreed to illegally acquire an item from a sorcerer that another human would like to add to his hoard, in return for nothing. Apparently, the promise of an adventure, however ill-advised, has provoked a strong response in subject C, whereas the promise of entering a garden has encapsulated the emotional response mechanism of subject M. I am bound to go with them in order to continue my study. This will be a valuable opportunity to study emotional responses in a high-stress environment. However, I would rather they did not go through with the plan, as it is a very dangerous proposition with little reward. The human who wants this extremely ugly statue for his hoard employs a great brute of a woman, Bloody Nikka, to ensure his safety. She attempted to threaten us with skinning. I will burn off her skin if she tries it.

Entry 4
My old colleague, Kettel the Dama, has reappeared outside the walls of Riverton in the caravan. She is much more logical than the others and I am reassured to have her support on this mission, as I am sure subjects C and M would not be able to properly execute this misadventure without additional assistance. They planned to survey the guard on the tower by causing a distraction, forgetting to check whether a guard was posted on the tower. There was no guard. Hours of work were lost.

This situation is getting a bit hairy, as local government and local criminal elements are involved. It appears the caravan master's hoard inspires jealously among other humans. What savages! However, both parties were extremely gullible, as they promised a monetary reward in return from random items from the tower. While I believe stealing other items from the tower is not a good plan, it is illogical to put so much effort into a mission without the promise of reward money. Subject M promised a meteor from the tower for Hugo the Chairtable. This was an illogical choice, because there is no guarantee that this item will be in the tower. Luckily, Kettel and I have the resources and expertise necessary to falsify a meteor.

We have surveyed the actual security of the tower and have determined that there is a large mechanical beast that guards the tower gardens. Subject M has decided to buy potions. This is ludicrous.

Entry 5
We have broken into the tower and destroyed the beast. Subject M summoned a large puddle, subject C provoked the beast into lumbering into the puddle, and Kettel used her robot, PAK, to electrocute it. I sat in a tree and stayed out of harm's way.

Subject M has taken to exploring every nook and cranny of the tower. This is an idiotic plan, because we have a limited amount of time to retrieve the items and leave before the sorcerer returned. I will abandon the subject if her actions put my safety at risk.

Subject M has released a light snake from a sealed vase. This is entirely illogical. She is chasing it, although it is clearly dangerous.

The sorcerer must die. He has defaced the remains of the dragon and kept them from rightful repatriation. I will burn everything he holds in regard. I will burn him. I will return the remains of my brethren to the land of the dragons.

Entry 6
Subject M has sustained injuries from chasing the light snake. I am unsurprised. Her pet otter has dragged her off to a place unknown, presumably for recovery. This is a good example of how acting on emotional impulses can lead to injury.

We have retrieved the statue. I will burn the tower.

Hugo the Chairtable dared to accost us in the street. We made the trade, he seemed to believe subject C's lies. It is possible that her irrationally combative response is linked to an ability to lie. Will have to test.

The governor's trained dog, Helen Thirdcoin stopped us in the street. We made the trade to the governor as well. I have singed a lackey of Hugo the Chairtable. He will think twice about crossing us.

The sorcerer followed us into the street, summoning earth gollums. He escaped before I could destroy him, but I burned and smashed his unnatural creatures. It was not enough, the sorcerer must die.

He reappeared at our hand-off to the caravan master. Kettel and subject C fled. The odds were not in my favor, so I assisted their flight.

I will return the remains of my brethren to our ancestral home, and then return to destroy the vile sorcerer scum.

Entry 7
We have left Riverton behind and no pursuit is discernible at the present moment. I will accompany Kettel and subject C as far as Los Assemblos and then continue north.

Subject C insisted on investigating any possible lead on the whereabouts of subject M. She has delayed our journey, but she has agreed to pay 333 crowns for 3 days worth of searching.

In one of her inquiries, an innkeeper told C that a group of ruffians had been asking about someone of M's description the day before. The innkeeper did not know where they went.

I recalled that a group of itinerant mages frequently spent time in this area and deduced that M would likely want to join them, as she is herself a mage. I investigated the surrounding area for signs that the mages had been present and found a campsite with an odd pattern of fires - 6 in total, pentagram shaped. I told the others about this, and we returned to the area to search for clues as to where they went. Subject C lit the center fire, and by the light of this fire, PAK's light, and virtue of the damp ground, we found that there were tracks that led south east. After camping overnight, we discovered that the 5 unlit fires had disappeared, a clear sign of sorcery.

While following the path through the woods, we ran into a hunter who demanded to part us from our money as a toll for the "upkeep and maintenance" of the forest. This is a completely ridiculous reason for a toll, the hunter was clearly lying. If he had demanded money for safe passage, that would have been a valid reason for payment. Anyone who thinks they can rob a dragon should be taught a lesson. It is a question of maintaining a level of respect and fear for our kind. We may need to schedule another pillaging, humans have gotten arrogant enough to think that there will be no repercussions to going against a dragon.

I devised a plan in which I deceived the arrogant hunter into coming close to take the toll from me, and then let loose a great plume of flame into his face. He was displeased with this outcome, and called his companions to attack.

The odds were against us. as we were three against 7, plus archers, but we fought valiantly. I brought down the hunter and one of his minions with my flames, Kettel and subject C each brought down one. The rest fled from our mighty fighting prowess, although they did manage to make off with a portion of C's money.

I will give C another day and a half before flying away north.

Entry 8
We located subject M not far from where we defeated the bandits. She was in a forest temple with the travelling mages, who wanted nothing to do with us. Subject M found the way back to Kettel's car via river, and we all drifted safely back to the cart.

Upon reaching Riverton, I immediately began preparations for the journey north. I made sure to eat enough food and pack some salted meat for emergencies, redistributed my coins, and safely packed the skull into a wooden box for transport. I also took some steps to begin the healing process of my loose scale.

Much to my dismay, I ran into Kettel and the two subjects leaving the north gate. Although they will slow down my journey and most likely cause me trouble and bodily risk, I will travel with them to continue my study as long as possible.

On the first night of our journey, we found a sandy campsite. During the first watch, taken by subject C, I was awoken due to her fear of large burrowing insects. I alerted the others to the potential danger and suggested slumbering in the trees instead. Kettel did not care. During the second watch, which was mine, I heard the noise of large flying beasts, definitively not dragons. It was too dark to make them out from the treeline. These noises frightened subject M during the third watch, and again I was awoken to check things out. They are beginning to see me more as a bodyguard than a scholar. This must stop. I investigated anyway, and saw two extremely large flying birdlike creatures, but I did not engage them as I was at a numerical and size disadvantage.

On our way down the road in the morning, these giant birds attacked our cart.

Entry 9
We defeated the large birds through a combination of skills. Kettle distracted them with her stunt driving, Subject M annoyed them with stinging rain. I injured one with flame, which subject C jumped on and stabbed in the head with her stilettos. I think she is developing a sort of blood lust, which is interesting, as the others react in a very strong negative manner to this trait. I roasted the other bird and had a nice meal.

We travelled for a bit in the cart before coming upon what looked like a bunch of campfires. Upon further investigation by Kettel, these campfires turned out to be an army encampment. In a stroke of good luck, Kettel's old airship friend, Eddie Stacks, was in a senior position in the camp. He let us pass through the camp unscathed. Apparently, this close to Gearwhistle, war is always on the horizon, they just did not want to admit it. I will never understand why humans must kill members of their own kind over such silly disputes. Can they not simply discuss the matter in a rational manner? Perhaps because they have such a short lifespan, they are unwilling to spend the years it takes to thoroughly work through such matters to a logical outcome.

On our way out of the army encampment, we were warned to stay clear of Ylarks. We saw a cloud of dust in the distance and decided to camp the night near to the encampment, and then head out in the opposite direction the next day.

Entry 10
Kettel was detained by Eddie Stacks on some technical manner, and the two subjects were too impatient to wait, so we pressed on into the Valley of the Cogs. Although I have flown over this area many times and explored it to some degree in my youth, it is not totally familiar to me. I was surprised how undereducated the two subjects were on the composition of the life here - of course the trees are made of metal, this is the Valley of the Cogs! Sun and sky, these young ones do not know anything.

We came upon sheds belonging to dwarves working in the mines here. Subject M displayed fear for the first time, and did not want to investigate the sheds. I believe the spirit of this place disturbs her absurd sensibilities toward what is "natural." When the dwarves returned, Subject C displayed some extremely odd behaviour, which seemed to make the dwarves what I presumed to be uncomfortable and possibly afraid, as evidenced by their fidgeting and red faces. They did provide us with the information that we should follow the river to find the Kettlegreen complex.

We were attacked by a rogue Ylark and I attempted to fly out of its path. Subject C, in a display of disgrace unlike any I have seen thus far, presumed to grab my tail to loft herself out of the path of the beast. Does she not understand flight dynamics? The tail is a crucial part of steering any additional, unexpected weight sets the course awry. Therefore, I was knocked into the beast, but managed to roll off, slightly bruised. I paid back the subject in part by leaving her in the path for a few (hopefully) terrifying moments before swooping to her rescue.

We made our way down to the river, which is of course composed of motor oil. I idiotically forgot just how strong the fumes from the river are, and we walked much too close to the river for too long. Subject M lost consciousness first, followed by Subject C, and then myself before we could move far enough from the river. When we came to, we were in some sort of cave system beneath the forest. We were confined under guard, but our belongings were not disturbed.

The guards led us to a dining chamber, and at the table sat an ancient elf. In a wondrous turn of irony, this elf was Pamplemousse Kettlegreen. Subject C was enraged and I understood why! I must be getting closer to learning the triggers to this subject's emotional responses. In short, the elf wanted all of us to work for her as some sort of ambassadors to our peoples. She was especially interested in subject C, due to her family lineage and her desire to do something of which her family would disapprove.

We have not given our responses, but of course I will work for no elf. We dragons have no interest in the political maneuverings of other beings. If there is something we don't like, we burn it down and wait for something new to grow. In the meantime, I will do what is best for my research and appear to be interested in the offer. We will see what the others decide.

Blaze works on the assembly line at the Factory for Production of Bits and Baubles as a welder (fire-breathing comes in handy!). Blaze is approximately human-sized at the beginning of the campaign, but size is a fluid characteristic, as dragons grow or shrink depending on the size of their hoard. Like all dragons, Blaze has trouble understanding human emotions, and is therefore constantly accused of contracting idiocy. This, however, is impossible, as dragonskin is invulnerable to idiocy. This fact is a closely guarded secret among the dragon community for fear of violence.

In most situations, Blaze is an extremely poor liar. However, Blaze cannot ignore the siren call of increasing hoard size, and can usually do what is required to make it happen.

Attempting to fit in as a scholar, Blaze wears a dress shirt, khakis, and glasses, although as a dragon, none of these items are required for comfort nor eyesight.

History
Downsized his hoard via sell-by-mail system and moved to Riverton. Got a job at Bits and Baubles Production. Now trying to understand humans. Madeleine D'Leau was broke, consented to be a research subject; has to follow Blaze around for a time. Champagne Truffle agrees to tag along but immediately gets into fights with Blaze, who tries to be her friend.

Log

* Saw a "cute" puppy
* Ate a piece of candy
* Stubbed her toe
* Stepped on pet otter's toe
* Stepped on an ant

Sessions
Jan. 11, 2016: creation session. This setting was created using a session of Spark for Fate Core. See the Bits and Baubles creation session notes.

Jan. 18, 2016: Welcome to Riverton.
* We flesh out the protagonists and introduce them to the city of Riverton.
* Geshon the Mouth tells the protagonists to seek out Samar the Caravan Master.
* Samar the Caravan Master convinces the protagonists to retrieve a strange statue (the Idol of Hellaq) from the Tower of the Serpents.
* Bloody Nikka promises gruesome revenge if the protagonists double-cross Samar.

Jan. 25, 2016: Factions.
* The group meets up with Kettel, who nearly gets into a fight haggling over scrap metal.
* The Governor summons the party to the Temple of Hadrin. With Helen Thirdcoin as backup, she bullies them into agreeing to bring her the treasure from the tower instead of bringing it to Samar the Caravan Master.
* The party convinces The Governor that what Samar is after is a book of spells; they agree to bring The Governor the book in exchange for 3600 crowns -- quite a sum!
* The party is invited by Little Hâr to see Hugo the Charitable. Hugo also offers them money to bring him whatever Samar had wanted, to the tune of 10% of the fenced price.

Feb. 1, 2016: Casing the tower.
* With a cleverly-built periscope, the team scopes out the Tower of the Serpents. They discover that the guardian of the tower is a giant mechanical gorilla.
* The group plans out how to get out, deliver the various packages to the various parties and skip town.
* Madeleine D'Leau blows all her money on useless potions, steals some money and buys even more useless potions.
* We all made shrinky dinks of the various characters (pics to come).

Feb. 8, 2016: Climbing the tower.
* The team subdues the mechanical sentry by electrocuting it in a giant puddle of water.
* An overwhelming feeling of dread grows stronger as they ascended the tower's many levels.
* Blaze Kindling is angered and horrified to find the skull of a dragon, carved with intricate runes and symbols. Blaze takes the skull into his care and is seeking revenge.
* Madeleine D'Leau finds a jar and releases a serpent made of light. She chases it up to the top floor, where they find the Idol of Hellaq encased in crystal.

Feb. 22, 2016: The Idol of Hellaq.
* The light serpent is found to be guarding the Idol of Hellaq.
* Madeleine D'Leau gets knocked out by the light serpent and is carried to safety by Mr. Lutro.
* Champagne Truffle defeats the light serpent by trapping it in a mirrored box, and the party escapes by jumping off the top of the tower.
* The party is approached and threatened by Hugo the Charitable, by The Governor and by the sorceror himself.

Feb. 29, 2016: Leaving Riverton.
* The sorceror accuses the party of stealing from him and summons earth gollums to attack.
* Champagne Truffle lies to the sorceror, convincing him that his tower is being looted, and he departs, leaving behind the earth gollums.
* The party defeats the gollums through a combination of fire and smashing.
* The group then proceeds to Samar the Caravan Master's caravan, only to be accosted by both Bloody Nicka and the sorceror.
* Outnumbered and overwhelmed, Champagne Truffle throws the Idol of Hellaq at the sorceror, leaving the team an opportunity to flee
* Pursued by the sorceror, Bloody Nicka, and her goonies, the team escapes Riverton safely via Kettel's cart

Mar. 7, 2016: The road north.

Log
Entry 1:

In order to study human behaviour and how the emotional compulsions influence their non-logical actions, I have decided to perform a case study - I will call this subject "M." This human is particularly compelled by emotional motives, to the degree that even other humans seem to pick up on the absurdity of her actions. In the short time I have observed her, she has involuntarily released tears for the following reasons:

- Saw a "cute" puppy
- Ate a piece of candy
- Stubbed her toe
- Stepped on pet otter's toe
- Stepped on an ant
- No discernible reason, when questioned, tear production increased and honking noises grew louder

I will have to find other subjects to compare to see if this is average behaviour.

Entry 2:
It appears as though finding an additional subject will not be difficult. A new subject, termed "C," has attached herself to subject M and refuses to leave. Subject C is extremely combative. She is also extremely small in stature. I have seen her react in anger (occasionally attempting to initiate combat) to the following:

- Someone mentioned the word "diminutive" in her hearing
- She was asked to speak up
- She could not reach an item on a shelf and destroyed everything on lower shelves
- A male human called her "cute"
- Someone said something positive about elves
- Someone said something negative about elves
- Someone said something neutral about elves

It appears as though each individual case responds with a different emotion to stimuli, but both respond entirely irrationally. I will continue to attempt to elicit these types of responses in both cases.

Entry 3:

The subjects have done something very illogical. They have agreed to illegally acquire an item from a sorcerer that another human would like to add to his hoard, in return for nothing. Apparently, the promise of an adventure, however ill-advised, has provoked a strong response in subject C, whereas the promise of entering a garden has encapsulated the emotional response mechanism of subject M. I am bound to go with them in order to continue my study. This will be a valuable opportunity to study emotional responses in a high-stress environment. However, I would rather they did not go through with the plan, as it is a very dangerous proposition with little reward. The human who wants this extremely ugly statue for his hoard employs a great brute of a woman, Bloody Nicka, to ensure his safety. She attempted to threaten us with skinning. I will burn off her skin if she tries it.

Entry 4:

Entry 5:

Entry 6:

Dragons are an ancient race who have populated the land now occupied by Machina and Gearwhistle since time immemorial.

Logic and reason rule dragon behaviour, and they have no innate understanding of human emotions. Co-existing with humans and human-like creatures can be difficult for dragons, because most creatures do not act as a dragon would expect them to act.

The hoard is a a crucial component of a dragon's life. A dragon's hoard begins at hatching when their mother gives them their first treasure. This treasure is known as the heart-piece and is linked to a dragon's life, as a dragon can only die when the heart-piece is destroyed. The size of a dragon's hoard dictates the size of the dragon. Dragons are compulsively attracted to collecting shiny and valuable things, and this led to some very large dragons in the past. However, with the need to adapt to changing times, most dragons have accepted that a logical means of gaining acceptance in society is to fit in physically as much as possible, which means most dragons limit their hoard to limit their size.

Dragonskin is invulnerable to many diseases, including the idiotic plague. This knowledge is closely guarded by dragons, for fear that they will become hunted and their skin will become a valuable commodity.

Dragons are few in number and constitute a very tight community. Conflict between dragons is not tolerated, and dragons that exhibit behaviour that is violent toward other members of the species or would be dangerous to the community are culled at the earliest opportunity. Indeed, dragons make most or all decisions by considering what would bring the greatest benefit to the species as a whole.

Because dragons are nearly indestructible, they live extremely long lives and die very rarely. This has lead to the evolution of strict cultural practices involving treatment of the dead. The principal principle of these practices is that all remains are returned to the dragons' homeland in Behemoth Bluffs, where they are kept in a special cavern for visiting purposes. Because dragons live so long, the living remember the dead, and will visit them with younger dragons to remind them what has come before and to teach them lessons about proper dragon behaviour. In a dragon's mind, it is of the vilest, most heinous type of crime to kill a dragon or to desecrate a body.
Kettel was an engineer in Machina's capital city. She spent decades working on some of the kingdom's most ambitious projects when its industrial revolution took off.

About 6' tall with gazelle's horns. Sand-coloured skin with black tips on the hands and face. Kettel still wears a mechanic's suit, even in retirement.

Being part of a tiny minority of Dama in the city, Kettel has heard every racist joke or remark ever made. Usually, she can brush them off and carry on. The worst offenders become victims of petty revenge and a little mechanical sabotage. She feels there's nothing wrong with forcing them to pay a hefty premium for her skills, which are always in demand in the industrial city. being retired, she doesn't treat these requests with any sort of urgency.

Kettel is assisted by a small drone/flying gyro, PAK (Personal Assistant to Kettel). PAK is dark blue and roughly spherical with brass rings around its middle. It hovers around using small rotors on its top and has a single green eye/lamp. PAK is equipped with a small complement of essential tools, and is capable of performing basic tasks on command.

History
Kettel was Chief Engineer aboard the Valley Echo.

The Echo strayed too close to Gearwhistle over the Valley of Cogs and was boarded by their forces in disputed territory. The Machina Captain was belligerent and ignored their demands to keep a wider distance from their border.

Kettel and her engineering team took control of the ship from the engine room and turned it back against the Captain's orders. The Captain was taken prisoner, but the rest of the crew were released.

Kettel was dishonourably discharged from service for the Captain's arrest, but was respected by the crew for getting them home safely. She hasn't worked with the Royal Airship Fleet since.

The Valley Echo was powered by a prototype engine, designed by Kettel herself with the help of Blaze Kindling. Kettel and Blaze formed a good working relationship, and remain friendly, although they have not worked together on any project since. The prototype engine is vastly more efficient than previous versions, and there is speculation that further punitive action was not taken against Kettel because she did not allow the prototype to fall into enemy hands.
