To the surprise of the crew of the ''[[Tabula Rasa]]'', the leader of the hostile surface expedition turns out to be none other than [[Jain]], [[Victorea]]'s long-lost sister. The two catch up on lost time, and Victorea repeatedly assures Jain that she is not a terrorist, that she didn't kill their mother, and that she did kill their father but only in self-defense.

Jain has been working as the navigator on board the ''[[Silent Sufferer]]'', and has proven to be highly skilled at plotting effective and efficient courses. With some difficulty, she manages to convince her captain to let her leave and rejoin her sister. The ''Silent Sufferer'' helps the crew of the ''Tabula Rasa'' with just enough repairs to get spaceborne, and the two ships together head back into the inner system. The ''Tabula Rasa'' ends up at a waystation in orbit around [[Zash'ar|Zash'ar 4]], where [[Connor]] bankrolls refueling and repairs.
