Ghost of Jupiter Subsector Overall Notes[edit]

This is the high level stuff for the GM, big plotlines, etc.

Chembu Deep Space Bioship Autumn Tidal Flow[edit]

The hunt for this bioship should be a big deal. I need to plot out its course, and note which if any mindscapes it might have synchronized with on the way. Not sure where it is yet. Its first destination after leaving the Geode was (ζ:17:-1). It left there headed for (ζ:42:-4), by way of (ζ:56:-1) and (ζ:55:-1). They then travelled to Avkoalai (ζ:61:2) on the way to the eruptive binary at (ζ:90:2). From there, they passed on to (θ:00:3). That system has a lot of exointelligence. Did they continue on, or is that where they stopped. Did they cause trouble there, as the imbalance worsened?

Smoking Mirror[edit]

Civilization in this part of the galaxy is millions of years old. Prior to about four million years ago, these civilizations all interacted with each other in networks of 2 and 3 space commerce and communication. Their science was minimally TI 11, and probably plumbed the depths of capabilities unimaginable. The "snowballs" are an example of their handiwork.

However, four million years ago a super-intelligence developed in this sector that was, to put it mildly, insane. Its motives were ultimately inscrutable, its not clear it even has motives, but its goal seemed to be the utter enslavement of all intelligence to its whim. It sought to replicate its thanogram across all the universe, even within the psyche of biological creatures.

For this purpose, it created what is likely the most sophisticated and powerful meme complex in the history of the galaxy. This complex of ideas, thoughts, ethics, morals, etc. interlocks in endless detail, all pointed to the purpose of forwarding the superiority of that ancient super-intelligence.

For 500,000 years, warfare of existential variety raged throughout this part of the galaxy, leaving the ancient civilizations in tatters. But there was success, the meme complex driven back literally at the cost of eradicating civilization.

In the end, this meme complex, which is often called "The Smoking Mirror" by those in its thrall, had no existence other than a single datastore on (α:51:4).

Morbius Metals[edit]

The "local" (meaning in this subsector) branch of Morbius Metals has become a slave to Smoking Mirror. A deep space probe of theirs triggered some kind of memetic "prison" and freed the concept. It can literally hack people's brains even if they are not Mindscape connected if it has an opportunity to study their sensory biology, rewiring them through sense contacts.

I think there are several manifestations:

  • signs of survey activity on marginal or better worlds, hard to spot
  • actual unregistered Morbius Metals colonies on marginal and better worlds outside of Octant Zeta.
  • Morbius deep space probes are corrupted, setting up "seed networks" around certain systems that will be strangely placed for Morbius Metals actual stated goals
  • Morbius is moving the Nghorrach around the subsector, establish colonies on many of the Marginal or better uncolonized worlds outside of Octants Beta and Zeta.

Smoking Mirror left behind "traps" in the subsector, ancient and hidden resources it can call upon. This may include entire worlds. (ε:98:-3:A) K-Class Main Sequence is an example.

Other thoughts:

  • building secret 3-space gateways?

(α:51:4) M-Class Subgiant This is the original source of Smoking Mirror. Needs full details.

(ε:14:2) K-Class Main Sequence Very important to Morbius Metals. Here they have found the Nghorrach, an easily manipulated and highly numerous humanoid population that has been enslaved through the existing religious dictatorship. See the notes for that system for more info.

Internal Stories[edit]

I need a list of ideas for things to happen that are internal to the crew, for when the boring survey work is boring. Some thoughts...

  • The "Swamp" goes a bit crazy/
  • Sleeper agent for Morbius Metals?
  • Mutiny!
  • Ursoid/Humanoid wedding party?
