A theatre troupe is performing Macbeth at the [[Grand Theatre]], and [[Orton Hedges]] is helping it along as he usually does. During the intermission [[Madeline Morris]] scoffs at the superstition surrounding this play, and whispers "Macbeth, Macbeth, Macbeth..." over and over again. To her surprise the second half is fraught with dropped lines, malfunctioning lighting and other such problems.

Sitting with Madeline in the audience, [[Charles Monster]] feels a sense of peril, as if someone is in danger. He encourages Madeline to take him backstage, where they meet up with Orton. [[Rishon]], also present, follows. Together they discover a princess hat on the upper platform of a tower set, and a disconcerting feeling on the seventh step.

Further investigation leads the four to [[Princess Towers]], an apartment building not far away. There they look for the seventh floor, but there is none! They take the stairs down from the ninth floor, past the eighth, and discover a magical doorway into a room where a faerie princess is trapped inside a huge iron cage. They find the golden key that unlocks the cage, and in gratitude the princess grants them each a small gift of knowledge before disappearing and leaving them confused in the stairwell.
