At least half of the people present at the ribbon cutting ceremony were sober (well... they were sober at the start of the speeches at any rate...) and they saw what happened. The most credible individuals who could have said what had happened are dead. Dr. Penny Glaucus is presumed dead, as are a few of her graduate students. Allan's supervisor was injured. One of Anton's clients had been killed, so Anton has "adopted" an aging dog that usually wears old-lady-inspired clothing, named Buddy.
Over the past few weeks, Anton had been indulging his vices, often with negative social results. One memorable instance was the time he showed up to a church and pissed on the free food that was being handed out to him. He was thrown into prison for that, and the Anton's is the only picture being circulated in that particular denomination of churches with the caption "Do not feed this man." He also received court-appointed anger management courses, held at Mohawk College's main campus. The only way he was able to get through those classes was with his spiked OJ. By the end of the first round of classes, Anton was able to say "I hear what you are saying, but you are a @#$! idiot."
Allan had caused some social upheaval. Changeling twin William's girlfriend, Anna Hsu, who was also the sister of Sandra Hsu, keeps seeing Allan ruin the people who are around him. For example, Will is now on academic probation, while his brother was just scraping by. As mentioned before, Allan's supervisor had been hurt in the building's collapse (he had somehow been thrown away from the building and had landed badly). As a result, Allan is staying on in the morgue for a short time. He is also trying to tutor Will in geography. And still studying for his next classes. And is dating Constable Stephanie Moordha, though it is still during the day time.
Veronica is investigating Jack. She's found out that Jack is connected to some of the weird stuff that has been going on in Hamilton, including the clay animals incident. Jack knows that Veronica is investigating him, but he isn't sure just how much she knows. He doesn't know that Veronica follows Maia on Twitter. He doesn't know that she saw him go all Anime-fu at the DoER's new(ly destroyed) building. He doesn't know that she knows how fast and strong he really is, and has the cell phone footage to prove it. That said, she has been searching for steroid use evidence. She even found Jack's book of mystic martial arts, but can't read it. (The book disguises its text. Anyone whom it has not chosen reads gibberish. The one whom it has chosen can read the instructions in its proper language.)
Sargent Providence found out that Jack was snooping even though she had specifically told him not to do so. Even though everything Jack did was perfectly legal, she was not happy.
The underground entity is still trying to figure out what its name should be. Allan is encouraging it, often offering ideas from mythology and history. Jack is trying to make it understand why it can't use dead bodies as a method of interacting with the outside world. Anton just calls it "Homie" like he does everyone else.
Dana Hawthorne asks Jack to do some investigating. Several people have been attacked by "wild animals" on Mohawk's campus, usually around sections E and F. For various reasons, she wasn't able to investigate herself. Jack agreed to help her and called upon Allan and Anton.
To investigate, the three placed themselves onto Mohawk's campus life. Jack took a photography course (which miffed off his girlfriend who wanted to be a forensic photographer, and was taking pictures all of her life!). Anton was taking his anger management courses there already... and had failed his first round. And Allan was TAing a first-year anatomy course, as well as getting in some workouts at the fencing club.
Some investigation had revealed that most people knew of a friend of a friend of a friend who had been attacked, until they found one actual name... who ended up on Allan's slab. He had died, not of the claw marks, but of heart failure. Allan hypothesized that this could have been due to a very fast-acting poison.
Each of the heroes happened to be at Mohawk when another attack occurred. Thanks to Anton's pack and Jack's speed, the large, hairy thing was stopped (i.e. it didn't kill a victim), but it managed to get away through a hole into The Nevernever. Anton, Jack and Allan quickly followed; though Allan managed to call 9-11 on the victim's cell phone first.
