Dragons are an ancient race who have populated the land now occupied by Machina and Gearwhistle since time immemorial.

Logic and reason rule dragon behaviour, and they have no innate understanding of human emotions. Co-existing with humans and human-like creatures can be difficult for dragons, because most creatures do not act as a dragon would expect them to act.

The hoard is a a crucial component of a dragon's life. A dragon's hoard begins at hatching when their mother gives them their first treasure. This treasure is known as the heart-piece and is linked to a dragon's life, as a dragon can only die when the heart-piece is destroyed. The size of a dragon's hoard dictates the size of the dragon. Dragons are compulsively attracted to collecting shiny and valuable things, and this led to some very large dragons in the past. However, with the need to adapt to changing times, most dragons have accepted that a logical means of gaining acceptance in society is to fit in physically as much as possible, which means most dragons limit their hoard to limit their size.

Dragonskin is invulnerable to many diseases, including the idiotic plague. This knowledge is closely guarded by dragons, for fear that they will become hunted and their skin will become a valuable commodity.

Dragons are few in number and constitute a very tight community. Conflict between dragons is not tolerated, and dragons that exhibit behaviour that is violent toward other members of the species or would be dangerous to the community are culled at the earliest opportunity. Indeed, dragons make most or all decisions by considering what would bring the greatest benefit to the species as a whole.

Because dragons are nearly indestructible, they live extremely long lives and die very rarely. This has lead to the evolution of strict cultural practices involving treatment of the dead. The principal principle of these practices is that all remains are returned to the dragons' homeland in Behemoth Bluffs, where they are kept in a special cavern for visiting purposes. Because dragons live so long, the living remember the dead, and will visit them with younger dragons to remind them what has come before and to teach them lessons about proper dragon behaviour. In a dragon's mind, it is of the vilest, most heinous type of crime to kill a dragon or to desecrate a body.
