Randy D. Aubergine ("The Dauberman") is a former convict who has a reputation in Kingston for being the man to go to when you need something... special.

Background[edit]

Growing up[edit]

I grew up in Brockville. Yeah, yeah, I know. My parents owned an auto body shop. It's a small, boring town so I started hanging out with the bad kids, who were into weird stuff. Really weird stuff, as it turns out. We ended up doing these strange jobs for these older people in town who I'm now convinced were a cabal. They really had it in for Kingston for some reason but we were too young to do anything in the big city and so we ended up collecting rare plants for them in the woods and breaking into one of the local pharmacies once in a while. Strange stuff but we got some money for it and didn't care too much.

One time I was alone in the woods and came across a person, except I knew it wasn't really a person. Not sure why. It knew what I'd been up to in the woods and what they were for, even if I didn't at the time. It offered to teach me magic. I didn't believe it, not really, but it's not like there's too much else to do in Brockville, so I agreed. Turns out there really is magic after all.

What shaped me[edit]

I learned a lot from that thing in the woods: how to make potions, find the necessary components, open my third eye, and a fair bit about magic in general. Life was great for a while: running with the bad boys and girls in town, angling to be a real part of the cabal, and learning real magic. Then everything went wrong. The thing in the woods told me one day that it had taught me enough and that it was now my turn to pay: it wanted me to serve it for seven years. Bugger that, I thought, and ran away thinking that it would be enough. The cabal had mundane criminal activities as well and either set me up for poking around too much or gave me the chance to prove myself that I screwed up. Either way I got caught selling drugs to an undercover cop the first time I tried to sell and I ended up in prison. No one I knew came to the trial.

Prison ended up being a much longer stay than it should have been. My records kept getting "lost" and they're not willing to let you out when that happens. I got good at making do and finding new uses for things. This was especially useful when I was making potions in prison. You make a lot of favours when you can do something like that, and bonuses are gold in the joint.

When I finally got out I had no real legal skills to speak of. That nasty coincidence of electronics not working well near me didn't help any. So I found myself in Kingston making potions to make ends meet. Problem is, the cops are keeping an eye on me. They're not too happy with their lack of decent records on a convicted drug dealer and seeing me apparently still dealing means that they bust me every once in a while, even if nothing that I'm carrying is actually illegal.

My nightmare becomes real[edit]

I've dreams about that thing in the woods grabbing me and taking me away, somewhere far away, for years. I always thought that I'd given it the slip, though. Until lately. I've been seeing it out of the corner of my eyes for months. Recently it's been more obvious. Always looking right at me, always smiling. Every time I see it I run the other way, but lately I've been thinking about confronting it.
