I grew up in Hamilton, youngest of a pretty big Portugese family. I had six older brothers and no sisters, so most of the time I was either ignored or coddled by my dad, either ignored or bullied by my brothers, and worked like an ox by my mom. Home life was kinda rough on me. We didn't have much money, and there were all sorts of demands on me: social and religious stuff, and of course my mom and I were the only ones thought fit do do any housework.

But in high school there was a boy who was different. (cont'd…)

My dad always spoke strongly and frequently against the increasing numbers of middle-eastern and other non-white people in Hamilton, so even when Rushad and I started sort-of dating I never told my family about him. I spent more and more time out of the house, hanging with him or some older kids I knew. We drank and we smoked cigarettes, we loitered and shoplifted. Then one day one of the guys showed up with a big book under his arm and a big grin on his face, and told us about magic. That was when all of our lives changed.

Background[edit]

Growing up[edit]

I grew up in Hamilton, youngest of a pretty big Portugese family. I had six older brothers and no sisters, so most of the time I was either ignored or coddled by my dad, either ignored or bullied by my brothers, and worked like an ox by my mom. Home life was kinda rough on me. We didn't have much money, and there were all sorts of demands on me: social and religious stuff, and of course my mom and I were the only ones thought fit do do any housework.

I didn't have a lot of friends at school — most of the kids there were from big catholic families too, and they didn't see anything wrong with the assumption that a boy's job was to be strong and smart, and a girl's job was to clean up after the smart and strong men in her life. But in high school there was a boy who was different. His name was Rushad, and he was Persian. I thought it was kind of funny, having heard that men from the middle east oppressed women so much, that he was the only boy I felt comfortable with.
