Background[edit]

Growing up[edit]

I grew up in Hamilton, youngest of a pretty big Portugese family. I had six older brothers and no sisters, so most of the time I was either ignored or coddled by my dad, either ignored or bullied by my brothers, and worked like an ox by my mom. Home life was kinda rough on me. We didn't have much money, and there were all sorts of demands on me: social and religious stuff, and of course my mom and I were the only ones thought fit do do any housework.

I didn't have a lot of friends at school — most of the kids there were from big catholic families too, and they didn't see anything wrong with the assumption that a boy's job was to be strong and smart, and a girl's job was to clean up after the smart and strong men in her life. But in high school there was a boy who was different. (cont'd…)
