What's worse, so is some of her blood! It doesn't take long to realize that Michael O'Neill might use her blood to create a clay copy of her.

Maia calls Jack Marks to fill him in on the situation. Together they meet up with Anton and track down O'Neill's house in East Hamilton. The house is warded, but Maia manages to get in through an unprotected window and let Anton in while Jack keeps watch outside.

Anton sniffs around a bit and finds the smell of someone who is probably Emily O'Neill. Apart from that, though, it seems like Michael lives alone. More importantly, Anton finds some tasty meat, cheese and beer in the fridge, and digs in.

In a downstairs workshop, Maia finds a work-table that bears signs of a human shape having been sculpted on it. A dab of blood lies in the spot corresponding exactly to where the emerald necklace cut her chest -- evidence that O'Neill was building her doppelgänger. Once she and Anton find mounds of blood-tinged clay in a back room, as well as a sculpted face that is an exact copy of Maia's, the next step is clear.

As soon as they step back outside, Maia is overcome with the sensation of being dragged in the direction of King's Forest. All three head there, and see two tables set up. On one lies Emily O'Neill, and Michael O'Neill is making some preparations on the other one. Nearby, Josephine Greenwood prepares part of the ritual, referring to a scroll. Upon arriving Maia promptly walks to the empty table as if sleepwalking, lies down and awaits her sacrifice.

Michael and Josephine had intended to lure Maia to the clearing, transplant her consciousness into the clay duplicate he had built, and then give her lungs to his sister. They didn't count on a bulldog chasing squirrels through the clearing and onto Michael's bare chest, nor did Josephine expect a chef with ninja fashion sense to climb a tree and nearly kill her with a single thrown rock.

Maia did everything she could to stop Michael from completing the ritual, including drawing him into a soulgaze. Eventually she managed to convince him that what he was doing was wrong -- even if it did require knocking him down and sitting on his chest.

In the end Josephine ran off, Michael broke down, and Emily was returned to the hospital where she belonged. Emily died peacefully a week later, and thanks to Maia's help Michael learned to grieve in a healthy and non-Frankensteinian way.

Maia Guarao wakes up with a pounding headache to find her expensive new emerald necklace missing. What's worse, so is some of her blood! It doesn't take long to realize that Michael O'Neill might use her blood to create a clay copy of her.
