Yggdrasil, also called the World Tree and other names, is an unfathomably large ash tree from Norse Mythology. In the Steel Town campaign Yggdrasil connects all living plants, in the mortal realm and in the Nevernever, in a network called the Rootways.

Traveling the rootways[edit]

Using wood magic, a sufficiently powerful practitioner may use Yggdrasil to travel from place to place. The traveler enters a tree in one location and exits from a tree in another location.

The difficulty of effecting this travel depends largely on the nature of the two end-points, and their affinities to Yggdrasil. The strongest affinities -- and thus the easiest travel -- is exhibited by ancient ash trees. The younger the tree is, the more difficult it is to make the connection to the rootways. Other trees are more difficult to use than ash, especially those species more distantly related. Even plants such as vines, ferns and grasses may be used as entry or exit points, but the difficulty gets higher the more distantly related they are.
