Victorea is an Eridani looking for her twin sister, and for a way to clean the blood off her hands.

Background[edit]
Growing up[edit]
I grew up on Eridanus 4 with my mother, father and twin sister sibling of::Jain. Mom and Dad had a lot of political disagreements; I tended to side with Mom while Jain tended more toward Dad's side. I grew up with a Stick it to The Man attitude, especially with respect to Eridanus' marriage policy.
Hanging over our heads was the fact that once we neared marriageable age, either my sister or I would be shipped off to another of the planets in the system to be paired up in an arranged marriage. We didn't know which of us would be taken, but it was frightening either way.
Starting out[edit]
When we were twelve, Jain was sent off to Po. Mom and I were not happy about this, but Dad insisted that it was just the way society worked, and that we should accept it.
As another part of "just the way things work," dad got me a "work-study" job at his accounting firm. He insisted that I learn to make a living, but I was uninterested and often just never showed up. For me it was a sort of a game: how many missed days would it take to get fired? I never found out, since Dad was senior enough in the company that he was able to torture me by keeping me employed, and bored, even though I had No Work Ethic.
When I ditched work, I spent my time dodging truancy officers with some kids a bit older than me. Many of them were part of various politically active groups, and I became an active member in some of these. Mom warned me not to tell my dad about any of my political affiliations; while she was all for getting politically involved and working to change the system, he was very much not.
Moment of crisis[edit]
When I was about eighteen we got a letter from the organization in charge of transporting boys and girls from planet to planet for arranged marriages. Apparently Jain never showed up at the other side. Dad flew into a rage, accusing Mom of treason, heresy, disobedience and anything else he could think of. He accused her of shipping my sister off with smugglers, of leading her astray, even of killing her. It was rare for him to lose his temper like this, and even more surprising when he attacked her. I stepped in to protect her, and the rest is kind of a blur.
Next thing I knew, Dad had stabbed Mom and I had stabbed him. Mom lay bleeding on the floor of our flat, and confessed to me what she had been hiding for years: that she had arranged with a smuggler named Dante to have Jain stowed away and taken to safety. She died in my arms shortly before the police arrived and arrested me.
Through some amazing twist of fate, or perhaps some sort of providence, I awaited my trial in the same cell as Dante, who had been arrested on unrelated charges. This sort of occurrence can't be an accident; I Don't Believe in Coincidences. Once I convinced him of my identity he told me that Jain had been marooned on Amber, and I began my plan to escape.
Sidetracked[edit]
From prison I called in some favours from some of the folks I used to hang out with when we were kids. Some of them now were involved in organizations such as the People's Front of Eridanus, which had access to weapons and ships, and the will to steal whatever they didn't have. My plan was to slip out with Dante, steal a ship and quietly make an escape without getting noticed. Instead the fanatics I partnered with bombed the hangar, killed dozens of people and attracted much more attention than they should have. Dante was lost in the chaos; I'm pretty sure he's dead.
On our way out of orbit, my collaborators attacked a merchant convoy, destroying what was probably essential merchandise and killing the ships' crews. One crew member kept pleading for help as the People's Front thugs scavenged the debris of his shattered ship. His voice was audible to all of us over the general broadcast channel but the scavengers ignored it, choosing instead to rob the carcasses of his colleagues. His voice got gradually fainter and his words more desperate until we left him out there to die.
There was one guy there who wasn't gleefully killing and stealing, an Antarean called Kratos. I wasn't sure what his deal was, but he clearly wasn't part of the People's Front (later I learned Kratos was looking for his sister too — see what I mean about no such thing as coincidence?). I offered him a deal: help me do right or get on the nearest escape pod. He threw in with me and during the next night cycle, when everyone was sleeping, we put on pressure suits and opened up every deck to space. All of my former allies suffocated and we turned back toward the wreck of the merchant convoy.
By the time we got there the guy we heard was, miraculously, still alive, conscious and broadcasting. But the things he was saying were different: dark, twisted, depressing monologues about death and inhumanity. I brought him on board and learned that he was a Sephiite named Sindri. Already I had Hands Stained Red; I didn't want this man's death to be on my head as well. I resolved to nurse him back to health as well as I could, and headed off to find my sister.
On my own[edit]
After a long search for Jain I finally found her on the outskirts of the Zash'ar system. She was well but scarred, inside and out, by the ordeal she had endured for over ten years. Now that I've found my sister I won't abandon her again. She's still a child in many ways, and although we are the same age she needs me as a guide — what would Jain do without me?
